Nikos Karavidas is a Physiotherapist, born on February 28th, 1985, in Athens. He established Schroth Scoliosis & Spine Clinic, a specialized center for conservative treatment of spinal deformities, like Scoliosis and Kyphosis. He is the inventor of PSSE – Schroth method (Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises), which is the latest development in scoliosis and kyphosis treatment. He gives educational courses in Greece and many other countries all over the world.

In 2007 he graduated from the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of West Attica. His clinical practice took place for 6 months in KAT General Hospital and his dissertation was titled “Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: Conservative and Surgical Treatment”.

In 2010 he started his MSc in Sports Physiotherapy at Cardiff University, graduated in 2012 and his dissertation was titled “The relationship between Functional Movement Screening (FMS) scores, hip strength, and postural control, measured as the Center of Pressure (COP) excursion during single leg balancing in young healthy adults”.

His education was continued with spinal disorders and mostly with Idiopathic Scoliosis and Kyphosis. In Milan, 2012, he was certified in Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis (SEAS) method and in Barcelona, 2014, he became the first Greek Physiotherapist who was certified in Schroth method by Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS), with Dr. Manuel Rigo (C1 Level). Next year in Zwolle, Netherlands, he continued his education with C2 Level of BSPTS method. As a recognition of his expertise, he became very soon an International Instructor in Schroth method.  The first Schroth course by BSPTS conducted in Schroth Scoliosis & Spine Clinic in December 2017.

In April and June 2015, he received his certification in McKenzie – MDT from the Greek McKenzie Institute, for the educational series about Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment of Lumbar, Thoracic and Cervical Spine. In October 2015, in Nijmegen, Netherlands, he was the first Greek who was certified in Schroth Best Practice method, attending the course in Maartenskliniek by Dr. Hans Rudolf Weiss, who immediately proposed to him to become Instructor Schroth Best Practice for the whole Balkan area. He refused, as he had already decided to teach with Barcelona Scoliosis Physical Therapy School (BSPTS).

In July 2018, he was certified in Schroth ISST (International Schroth Scoliosis Treatment) in Bad Sobernheim, Germany, attending the course by Axel Hennes, Head of Physiotherapy Department and Education for more than 20 years. Later on, in October 2022 when he decided to leave BSPTS, he was invited to become Instructor by Schroth ISST, but he kindly refused as his decision was to start teaching his own method, PSSE – Schroth method.

In February 2020, he received his certification in Lyon method, by Dr. Jean Claude de Mauroy, in Cairo, Egypt, which also belongs to Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE).

Thus, he is one of the very few Physiotherapists worldwidely who is certified in all Schroth techniques, getting his education from the experts, BSPTS with Dr. Manuel Rigo, ISST with Axel Hennes and Best Practice by Dr. Hans Rudolf Weiss.

Moreover, he is the only Physiotherapist in the world that was invited to be Instructor by every Schroth School, as he was Teacher for 5 years for BSPTS, he was invited to be Instructor for Schroth ISST and Schroth Best Practice, and finally he developed his own PSSE – Schroth method, which is based on original Schroth method principles, as they were described by Katharina Schroth and Christa Lehnert Schroth.

His knowledge and experience led in 2022 to the official development of his own approach, which is named  PSSE – Schroth (Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises), which is the latest advancement in scoliosis and kyphosis treatment worldwidely. A new classification of scoliosis curve type was introduced, with unique and innovative concepts for 3D correction, having received some influences from all PSSE Schools that he is certified.

During the last years he participated in the most important Greek and International Scientific Conferences about spinal disorders. Since 2012 he took part in every Society on Scoliosis Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) Meeting, Milan – Italy 2012, Chicago – USA 2013, Wiesbaden – Germany 2014, Katowice – Poland 2015, Banff – Canada 2016, Lyon – France 2017, Dubrovnik – Croatia 2018, San Francisco – USA 2019, Online 2020 – 2021, San Sebastian – Spain 2022, Melbourne – Australia 2023, Boston – USA 2024.

In May 2015, Katowice – Poland, he became the first Greek Physiotherapist who presented his research in the Annual SOSORT Meeting and since then every year he had oral presentation in all Annual Meetings. In October 2017, for Eurospine Meeting, which is the most important Spine Conference in Europe, he was the only Greek presenter. Since 2018, he is always a Member of SOSORT Scientific Committee.

Except from his international scientific work, he has made great efforts for promotion, recognition, and implementation of PSSE for scoliosis treatment, by giving lectures to conferences, workshops, webinars etc. for educational purposes to doctors, physiotherapists, and other health professionals. He always actively participates in the most important Greek and International Conferences for spinal deformities.

The recognition of his expertise led to be invited Lecturer for the Deutscher Kongress fur Orthopadie und Unfallchirugie – DKOU 2015 in October 2015. His lecture was “Corrective Exercises in the Treatment of Scoliosis”.

In October 2017, for the Annual Eurospine Meeting in Dublin, he received a Travel Grant to participate as new Researcher by presenting his research with title “Bracing for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann Kyphosis: The issue of overtreatment in Greece”. Every year in Eurospine Meeting, only 5 Travel Grants are awarded amongst hundreds of participants.

In April 2018, he was invited and became SOSORT Scientific Committee Member for the 13th SOSORT Annual Meeting in Dubrovnik, Croatia. He was also Keynote Presenter and Moderator in 2 round tables with titles “Screening Tools for Spinal Deformities” and “Spinal Deformity and Back Pain”. He is still Scientific Committee Member for every next SOSORT Meeting. In April 2019 he was invited Lecturer for the 1st International Conference on Scoliosis Management in Istanbul, while in June 2020 he was invited to present a Webinar titled “Current topics in Pre-adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis” together with the President of Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), Muharrem Yazici.

In April 2020, he became the first Greek Physiotherapist that his research was presented in the 27th International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques (IMAST), which is organized by Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), the most powerful scientific committee for scoliosis and spinal deformities treatment.

Some of his presentations in international spine conferences have been voted as the best. In April 2021, his research with title “Brace and Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis Specific Exercises (PSSE) for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) treatment: A prospective study following Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) criteria” was voted as one of the best for the 16th SOSORT Annual Meeting and was presented in the special section “SOSORT Award Session”. In September 2022 his research with title “Complete non-operative treatment with brace and scoliosis specific exercises can be effective for severe scoliotic curves exceeding 40 degrees at peak of growth” was voted as the best presentation for 3rd Scoliosis Symposium (SCOSYM). In October 2022 his paper with title “Non-operative treatment with brace and PSSE for severe scoliotic curves exceeding 40 degrees at peak of growth” was awarded as the best oral presentation for the World Spinal Column Society 9 Congress.

Another honored recognition came from the Eurospine, who invited him to be Faculty Member for the Eurospine Diploma in Interprofessional Spine Care (EDISC), which is the first Eurospine diploma about conservative treatment of scoliosis and other spinal deformities. This invitation had great importance, because the most famous Orthopedic Surgeons in Europe participate every year in Eurospine Meetings. EDISC diploma started in September 2021 and takes place every year. Moreover, in January 2023 he was invited to give a lecture for an official Eurospine Webinar with title “Rehabilitation of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis”.

From 2020, Nikos is also Reviewer for European Spine Journal and European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, which are highly ranked Scientific Journals with great Impact Factor.

In April 2017, he established Schroth Scoliosis & Spine Clinic, a specialised centre for scoliosis and spinal deformities treatment in Greece, and one of the largest in the world, as more than 250 patients visit the clinic every week. The clinic is also the venue of PSSE – Schroth educational courses. In December 2017, he started teaching Schroth courses in Greece (BSPTS-Rigo Concept) and in September 2019 to abroad (Turkey and Egypt), being the first ever Instructor for Schroth method in the whole Africa region. Since October 2022 he exclusively teaches his own method, PSSE – Schroth.

His experience and expertise had led hundreds of patients from many different countries (Cyprus, Turkey, Albania, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Italy, France, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Russia, Belgium, Netherlands, Czech, Norway, USA, Saudi Arabia, India, Panama, Canada etc) to visit Schroth Scoliosis & Spine Clinic in Athens, to receive scoliosis treatment. He also gives consultation for physiotherapists and patients outside Greece and is involved in research projects with collaborations abroad.

He was the Official Physiotherapist of Israeli ApiFix Ltd company, inventor of ApiFix system for scoliosis treatment, a minimally invasive procedure which is combined with scoliosis specific exercises. Furthermore, he collaborates with many Orthopedic Spine Surgeons in Greece and abroad for non-fusion techniques.
